What a chain-link tension bar does and where it belongs

Do not infer terminal-post diameter, band size, or bolt dimensions from bar width. These parts operate as an assembly, and a bar labeled “residential” or “commercial” is not automatically compatible with every post and hardware set in that category.

Calculate how many tension bars and bands you need

Tension-bar quantity is determined by terminating fabric edges, not total linear footage.

A 20-foot run and a 100-foot run may each need two bars if each is one uninterrupted stretch between two terminal posts. A shorter layout with corners, gate openings, and separate panels may need considerably more.

The core calculation is:

Total tension bars = total number of terminal fabric edges

Straight-run example

For one continuous stretch between two end posts:

The run’s length does not change that count unless the layout introduces another fabric termination.

Do not use the bar count as the band count

Complete the order with bands, bolts, nuts, and installation tools

A bare tension bar does not complete the terminal connection. The documented attachment arrangement also uses:

  • Carriage bolts
  • Nuts
  • A compatible terminal post, gate upright, or frame

Install the tension bar without distorting the mesh

1. Put the tension bands on the terminal post

2. Position the fabric edge

Stand or unroll the chain-link fabric beside the terminal post. Identify the first full diamond or final complete weave at the terminal edge.

The bar should pass through a consistent vertical sequence of complete edge openings. If the edge is damaged, twisted, or partially unwoven, stop and identify the correct terminal weave before proceeding.

3. Thread the tension bar vertically

Starting at one end of the fabric edge, slide the bar vertically through the first full diamond. Continue through the corresponding edge openings while keeping the bar parallel to the fabric edge.

Do not skip unpredictably between interior diamonds or force the bar diagonally across the weave. The objective is a continuous, straight attachment edge.

The working sequence makes the difference clear:

  1. A permanent tension bar secures the first terminal fabric edge.
  2. A temporary stretcher bar is inserted farther along the run.
