Check Your Safe—and Rethink the Fingerprint Lock
Match affected models and serial numbers, follow the correct remedy, and compare biometric, keypad, key and dial locks by their failure modes.
CPSC recalled about 9,100 BBRKIN and MouTec biometric gun safes in July 2026 because unauthorized users could open the biometric lock—the feature sold as extra security. The interim response was to stop using that feature and rely on the mechanical key until a free repair kit arrived. That reversal supports a narrow verdict: for ordinary home storage, a mechanical lock or simple keypad is often the safer default because added biometric or app electronics create more failure modes without proven security gain in the evidence reviewed here.
If your safe may be recalled, do not test it with an unenrolled fingerprint and do not keep relying on its biometric feature. Keep firearms and keys inaccessible to children and other unauthorized people. Identify the exact brand, model and serial number, then follow the instructions for that recall. Battery removal is appropriate only when the product-specific notice directs it.
The Case For Biometric Locks
The received wisdom is reasonable. A fingerprint cannot be forgotten like a code or misplaced like a key, and quick access can be valuable. Biometric locks are marketed and commonly perceived as harder to defeat than a dial or keypad.
The recalls do not prove that every biometric safe is unsafe, nor do they establish that every mechanical lock or keypad is secure. A well-made, correctly installed electronic lock may suit some owners better than a slow dial. The evidence supplied also contains no controlled comparison of attack resistance, access speed or failure rates across lock types, so it cannot prove a universal ranking.
What the record does show is a repeated class of failure peculiar to the added access system. In separate recalls, fingerprint readers accepted unauthorized or unpaired fingerprints, products remained in demo or default-to-open modes, or biometric locks otherwise allowed unauthorized opening. The final fallback was repeatedly the simpler physical key.
That changes the default choice. Electronics need to earn their complexity with demonstrated security, not merely convenience. The supplied evidence shows the extra failure modes clearly; it does not show a compensating security gain.
The 2026 Recall Turns The Premium Feature Into The Defect
The July 2026 recall covers BBRKIN and MouTec model QHXP029B, serial numbers SQC200034980 through SQC202319171. About 9,100 units were sold exclusively on Amazon.com from March 2022 through February 2024. “MouTec” or “BBRKIN” appears at the upper-right of the front, and the serial label is at the lower-right.
The hazard was direct: unauthorized users could open the biometric lock, creating a risk of serious injury or death. No incidents or injuries had been reported at recall time. Owners were told to stop using the biometric option, use only the key when storing firearms and obtain a free repair kit, according to the CPSC recall notice and CPSC-attributed reporting.
A MouTec name alone does not establish eligibility. A separate February 2024 MouTec recall involved about 2,200 safes. Do not apply the QHXP029B serial range or 2026 repair-kit remedy to that older group.
Choose your lock and use case, then match any safe against the recall rows and follow the result line.

Fingerprint Failures Recurred Across Separate Designs
The 2026 event is not an isolated reason to scrutinize the reader. Separate 2023–2024 recalls show different routes to the same outcome: a person without an enrolled fingerprint could gain access.

The Awesafe recall covered certain black two-pistol safes marked “Awesafe,” sold at Walmart stores and through Amazon.com and Walmart.com from August 2019 through December 7, 2022, for approximately $130. CPSC received 71 reports of unauthorized opening and no injuries. Owners were instructed to stop biometric use, remove the batteries, use the key, disable and photograph the reader, receive a replacement, and then discard the recalled safe as directed and according to local laws in the official notice.
The Sanctuary and Sports Afield recall covered SA-IHS2B, SA-IHS2B-D and SA-HDF-BIO. About 133,370 units were recalled because unpaired fingerprints could open them until a fingerprint was programmed. There were 77 reports, including at least three involving children, and no reported injuries. The remedy was a repair kit containing a replacement biometric programming component. Serial numbers are behind the keyhole cover for the two SA-IHS2B models; SA-HDF-BIO also has one on the interior door sticker. The manufacturer notice gives current details.
Bulldog recalled 33,500 BD4030B, BD4040B and BD4055B vaults. They ship in demo mode and may accept any fingerprint if not properly programmed. Bulldog reported four incidents and no known injuries or deaths. BD4030B and BD4040B qualify for a repair kit or, for an owner uncomfortable doing the repair, a replacement; BD4055B receives a replacement. Replaced units must be returned with the prepaid label and must not be used, sold, gifted or discarded. Check the Bulldog notice.
The Fortress recall covered more than 60,000 products sold under labels including Fortress, Cabela’s, Gettysburg and Legend Range & Field from January 2019 through October 2023. At least 39 unauthorized openings were reported. A lawsuit alleged that a 12-year-old obtained a firearm from one safe and died; that is an allegation, not a conclusive causal finding in the reviewed evidence. The remedy was a free replacement after the required disabling process under the official Fortress recall.
Machir recalled approximately 24,820 biometric personal safes. The safes measure about 10 by 14 by 10 inches, with the serial at the lower-right of the front door. Owners were instructed to disable and photograph the reader to obtain a replacement. The 12 affected ranges are included in the checker; compare every character.
These report counts are not defect rates and should not be combined. They reflect reports known at particular times. No report does not mean no hazard, but a recall of specific products does not condemn every biometric lock.
Added Electronics Expand The Ways A Lock Can Fail
A mechanical dial presents a mechanical mechanism. A key lock adds custody and duplication risks. A keypad adds a code, batteries and circuitry. Biometrics add enrollment logic, a sensor and software decisions about what counts as a match. Bluetooth or app control adds wireless communication, a phone, app support and account or update dependencies.
That is an attack-surface argument, not proof that every simpler lock is stronger. Poor construction, exposed override keys, weak bolts or an unanchored safe can defeat the benefit of any lock. The supplied recall evidence also identifies no Bluetooth-app recall among the listed events, so Bluetooth should not be represented as recalled on this record.
Still, the recalled fingerprint systems demonstrate a damaging pattern: the feature intended to distinguish authorized from unauthorized users sometimes failed open. SA products could accept unpaired fingerprints before enrollment; Bulldog units could remain in demo mode; Fortress products could remain default-to-open even when owners thought setup was complete. Awesafe and QHXP029B notices describe unauthorized opening without establishing those same detailed mechanisms.
For documents and ordinary valuables, a dial or straightforward keypad often avoids biometric enrollment and app dependencies. For firearms, lock selection must also satisfy applicable law and safe-storage requirements; no lock-choice argument overrides those obligations. Fast authorized access and prevention of unauthorized access must both be assessed against the actual product, household and governing requirements.
Match The Exact Recall Before Taking Action
There is no single biometric gun safe recall. Separate notices cover different models, serial ranges, remedies and disposal rules. Matching only a brand or retailer can send an owner to the wrong procedure.
For QHXP029B, photograph the full front, upper-right brand mark, model marking, lower-right serial label and Amazon order record if available. The supplied material does not establish whether secondhand owners qualify, whether a receipt is mandatory, which photographs the claim requires or how the kit must be installed. Use the current CPSC page and its verified claim channel rather than an unofficial video.
If a label is unreadable, stop relying on biometrics, photograph every visible mark and locate the receipt or order history. Ask the manufacturer for written eligibility confirmation. Do not dismantle the safe, bypass its lock or improvise a repair.
Retailer, color, capacity, dimensions and price are screening clues, not proof. Amazon sold products involved in several separate recalls. MouTec appears in both 2024 and 2026 events.
The Correct Remedy Is Product-Specific
Temporary key-only operation does not finish a recall. Depending on the product, the final remedy may be a repair component, a replacement after disabling and photographing the reader, return of the original safe, or authorized disposal.

Keep photographs, the complete model and serial number, proof of purchase if available, claim confirmation, case numbers, shipping records and written disposal authorization. A recalled safe should not be sold or given away while a claim is pending.
If key-only operation is unavailable or the key is missing, restrict access to the surrounding area and contact the manufacturer or CPSC. Do not improvise. Keep both the firearm and physical keys inaccessible to children and every other unauthorized person.
Self-storage is not a default workaround. Firearms and ammunition are prohibited at most self-storage facilities, and the facility’s written rules must be checked explicitly.
A Simpler Lock Is A Default, Not A Guarantee
For a new home safe, begin with the least complex lock that satisfies the actual use case, applicable law and the need for reliable authorized access. A mechanical dial avoids batteries, software and biometric enrollment. A simple keypad adds electronic convenience but fewer dependencies than a fingerprint-plus-app system. A key can be reliable if custody is rigorous, but a visible or accessible backup key can defeat the entire arrangement.
Then evaluate the complete safe: construction, anchoring, key control, lockout behavior, battery-failure behavior and manufacturer support. The draft evidence supplies no comparative burglary ratings or failure-rate figures, so none should be inferred.
The practical red flags are specific: a biometric or wireless feature that can fail open; demo or default modes; unclear confirmation that enrollment is complete; an override key stored nearby; missing model or serial labels; no verified remedy channel; or a product that matches a recall but has not received the final repair or replacement.
The July 2026 recall makes the tradeoff unusually clear. A premium fingerprint reader did not merely stop working; it could admit the wrong person. Until added electronics show a security benefit strong enough to offset their extra failure modes, mechanical and simple keypad locks remain the more defensible default for routine home storage.
